You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the Japanese language and culture through the Intensive Japanese Language Course and the Japanese Culture and Civilization Course.

Intensive Japanese Language Course
Designed for students willing to devote 3 to 5 hours to study daily. On arrival in Japan, students take a placement exam to determine their appropriate class and session. There are 6 levels of instruction at KCP. Each level is assigned a course number that is used by the sponsoring university and that will appear on a student’s transcript upon completion of the course. Intermediate and advanced classes (Levels 3 through 6) are generally held in the morning, while beginner classes (Levels 1 and 2) are usually held in the afternoon.

One primary advantage to the KCP program is that it takes place in Japan, where you are immersed, 24 hours a day, in the Japanese language. This gives you an excellent opportunity to use your Japanese in everyday practical situations. You do not have to be fluent in the Japanese language in order to begin to use it and understand it. Make a conscious effort to use your Japanese, even in the most limited way. Look for opportunities to improve your language skills and utilize what you have learned. Be persistent, despite the occasional frustration of not being understood. You will get the most out of this program through repeated practice. Remember, the semester program is very short. If you don’t make a strong commitment, you may not significantly advance in your Japanese language skills.

All language courses are taught in Japanese (known as the Direct Method—for more information, see Learning Language and Culture, Intensive Japanese Language. Your small group session may sometimes take place in English. From 150 to 250 kanji are introduced each term, depending on the level. Your overall development of the 4 communication skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—is the goal of the KCP Intensive Japanese Language courses.
