Discovering Chofu by KCP Spring 2023 student Andalucia Curtis (Part 1)
The capital city of Japan, Tokyo, is more often than not, thought of by many as a bustling city full of chaotic energy. Unbeknownst to some are the Tokyo suburbs that can give visitors a chance to experience the culture and way of life of the locals. Only a mere 15 minutes west of Shinjuku Station is the city of Chofu where there are so many things to discover.

On the weekends, I think it’s refreshing to go to new areas of Tokyo, to broaden my perspective and discover another side to the city. Moreover, it’s a great way to practice my Japanese and explore areas by myself. KCP has absolutely helped me hone my confidence with understanding the language on a deeper level, and exploration helps implement my learning even further. This goal led me to discover Chofu, a city 30 minutes away from Shinjuku Station via the Seibu line (and around an hour from the KCP Ikebukuro dorms). It also neighbors the city of Mitaka, home of the Ghibli Museum.
At first glance, Chofu doesn’t seem too remarkable compared to other areas of Tokyo, housing the usual-looking streets, department stores, and residential areas. But a short walk away from the station is Jindaiji, the second oldest temple in Tokyo and home of a beautiful old-timey street, Tokyo’s biggest botanical garden, and multiple yokai-themed attractions.

The temple is set in a lovely, wooded area, with many winding paths to get lost in. On such a sunny day, it was great to wander down the different streets and see where they go, each path taking me to a new, beautiful place. Then, after wandering, you can also head back out to the main road for all sorts of street food. I ended up getting manju with red bean filling, which I enjoyed while sitting alongside the road on one of the many benches. Although not too popular with foreigners, there were quite a few locals out and about, so the atmosphere was lively and fun.
